Buffalo, New York (SUNY), is one of the scholars who has devoted her life to studying the
Korean alphabet and uncovering the philosophical and historical significance of the
language. She discovered a system within the Korean language and applied it to practical
language teaching methods. Her research was published in the book titled, The Korean
alphabet of 1446, Ex p os itio n s O PA , t h e Vi sible S p ee ch S ou n ds Tr an s l at ion wit h A n no ta tion
F ut ure A ppli cability, and transf ormed into a 50-minute lecture. Dr. Ki m- Cho states that after
her lecture, students were able to read and write the Korean alphabet.

Her lecture was
later developed into a CD-ROM and distributed by a company called OPA 21, Korea.

The
objective of the CD-ROM lecture is to help people to understand the des ign principles of the
Korean Alphabet and enable them to read Korean syllables within 50 minutes by using
visual explanation such as graphic illustrations of philosophical concepts. Dr. Kim-Cho’s
ultimate goal is to utilize the Korean scientific writing system as a universal system of
phonetic symbols for other languages, especially for people who do not have a writing
system in their own language.
Despite the objective of the CD-ROM, the communication of the design principles of
the Korean writing system were not well designed when graphically examined. With high
expectations, the author studied visual components to improve the quality of the CD-ROM.
