to Dr. Gari Ledyard of Columbia University, the functions and characters in the Korean
writing system are highly related to one another. For example, characters of basic
consonants are depicted according to the shape of the mouth and the whole consonant has
been systemized according to t ypes of sounds. Dr. Ledyard goes on to describe the Korean
written language system as a sumptuous example of linguistics.

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
nominated the Korean writing system as a c ultural written heritage in October of 1997.

1.2 Problem Statement
Korea has become a highly industrialized country that is home to notable corporations
such as Kia, Hyundai, LG, SK and Samsung. According to the ISI (Information Society
Index) research that was conducted in 2004, Korea is eighth out of the top ten countries
dominating the Information and Technology industries all over the world.

Because of the
global relationships that these companies have developed, increasing numbers of foreign
businesspeople have begun studying the Korean language.
