session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD, held in
July. The Conference has now become the single largest multi-
stakeholder global forum in the 1eld of disability.
Through the work of the UN Inter-Agency Support Group on the
CRPD (IASG), co-chaired by DESA, OHCHR and UNESCO, we
continued to make progress in system-wide United Nations
e*orts to promote the implementation of the Convention. The
United Nations Secretariat also advanced its e*orts to make the
United Nations itself more inclusive, especially through the work
of the Inter-Departmental Task Force on Accessibility. On 4
December, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon oCcially opened the
United Nations Accessibility Centre. Through the Centre,
participants in all events at United Nations Headquarters in New
York will have access to state-of-the-art assistive technology and
other services that will enhance and enable genuine
participation.
As we look towards the New Year, we are inspired by the
messages of inclusion that were shared on 3 December by
Member States, UN system entities and civil society at this
year’s very energetic commemoration of the International Day
of Persons with Disabilities.
With these in mind, we very much look forward to working
closely with you in 2014 to take action on the outcome
document of the HLMDD and, in doing so, to realize our shared
vision of inclusive, accessible and sustainable development for
all.
