Holiday Greetings Message Form

2013 Holiday Greetings from SCRPD:
A Message of Inclusion!
As 2013 comes to a close, we at the Secretariat for the
Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
(SCRPD/DSPD/DESA) would like to thank you for your support for
the United Nations’ e*orts towards the realization of human
rights and development for all persons with disabilities.
This has been an extraordinary year! Notably, on 23 September,
the General Assembly held a 1rst-ever High-Level Meeting on
Disability and Development (HLMDD) – truly a United Nations
milestone!
The High-Level Meeting was convened to narrow the gap between
existing international commitments and reality on the ground.
Through the Meeting’s highly participatory preparatory process,
Member States, UN entities and civil society contributed to the
Meeting’s outcome document. Following its unanimous adoption at
the opening of the HLMDD, DESA, with the contribution of the Nippon
Foundation, made this landmark document available in accessible
multimedia formats for ALL. The outcome document now constitutes
a fundamental framework for action for disability inclusion in the
coming years, designed to feed directly into the United Nation’s on-
going discussions toward a post- 2015 development framework.
Indeed, we saw many signs this year, including from the
Commission for Social Development and the Secretary-General’s
High-Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Agenda,
of commitment to and recognition of the need for the inclusion
of disability in any emerging development agenda. In July, DESA
also held the inaugural session of its DESA Forum, bringing
together a wide range of stakeholders in discussions toward a
disability-inclusive development framework. We look forward to
the Forum’s second session, to be held in mid-2014.
The number of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) has continued to grow,
numbering 138 as of 10 December. More than 750
representatives of Governments, UN entities, organizations of
persons with disabilities and others participated in the 6th
