Good evening honoured guests, parents, and teachers,
Grade 7’s a special good evening and congratulations to you,
It is an absolute privilege and pleasure to stand before you as a representative of the many
teachers who have been with you along your journey to this moment.
Remembering back to when we were in Grade 4, together with Mrs. Vales (Melo), some of you
gave me different plants as gifts. Maybe you can recall.
I put the plants, including their bulbs and roots, into a disproportionately enormous pot on my
balcony. These plants were small and humble. Throughout the seasons, they flourished and
deteriorated. At times, I wondered if they would make it! Yet, as with all life, there are times of
stillness, of change, and times where gentle pruning is needed to stay healthy, to regenerate, and
to move in the right direction.
I’m thrilled to say that last weekend, those plants were so large, I had to transplant them. In
doing so, I thought of you, and the transformation you are about to experience.
In transferring these plants, I needed to prepare a place, and had to think about where to put them
so they would continue to grow to their fullest. Should the plants be mixed with a variety of
others? Should they be bunched with those that are similar? In the same way, should you move
forth to a place, a school, with students from a wide variety of backgrounds? Should it be a co-
ed, all-girls or all-boys school, art school, dance school, sports school? There are so many
choices. You and your families have carefully chosen the right place for you, where we trust you
will be able to develop to your fullest.
But the metaphor does not end at looking only towards the future. When beginning to shuffle the
plants, I did not realize how intertwined the roots had become over the years they were together
in one pot. As I struggled to carefully but firmly pull them apart, I thought of you. Though you
are very different from one another, you have become tightly intertwined as a group. Perhaps
unbeknownst to you, it was in growing with one another: in collaborating, challenging, cheering,
pushing, pulling, and leaning on one another, that you weathered storms, gained resilience, and
now thrive.
